  6. »CL1:This   is   the   last  issue  of  the
  7. Eurochart  with the present charts, in
  8. the  future,  a  radically  new way of
  9. presenting   the   charts   will   get
  10. introduced.   To that effect, we would
  11. like  you  sceners  to contribute with
  12. suggestions,  to make sure we have the
  13. charts  you  want.   This is the first
  14. major  rehaul of the charts in the EC,
  15. and  as  such,  we want to be sure, we
  16. have  your  support  in  doing  it (to
  17. avoid  a  storm  of  angry letters, as
  18. when   Depth   tried  to  abolish  the
  19. swappers chart).

  21. »CL0:Let  me  tell  you a bit about what we
  22. think  will  be  in  the charts in the
  23. future.

  25. »CL1:First  off,  old Amiga productions and
  26. inactive   people,   must  move  to  a
  27. Legendary   Production  and  Legendary
  28. Scener chart.  I do not like this move
  29. myself,  indeed,  I do not like moving
  30. the  charts  to  PPC, but it is either
  31. this  or  having  really  outdated and
  32. wrong  charts.  In short, it is PPC or
  33. death.   It  might be death anyway, if
  34. we  do not get enough sceners on those
  35. platforms,  but  that  is  the risk we
  36. must  take.   In  time,  when  the new
  37. scene  has  fully  emerged,  we  might
  38. phase out these two old categories, if
  39. people  do  not  vote on them anymore,
  40. but personally I hope they will.

  42. »CL0:To  replace  our  old  charts, we will
  43. have    charts   for   all   the   new
  44. productions,  68k  aswell  as PPC.  It
  45. will  be  sort of a clean slate, where
  46. you  can only vote for productions and
  47. sceners active around the start of the
  48. next  EC including a chart.  Let's say
  49. that everything goes close to perfect,
  50. the new scene thrives, and the next EC
  51. will  be  out in the last days of 2004
  52. (somebody better produce a new PPC and
  53. 68k  engine fast then).  Then we would
  54. say  that  you  might  only  vote  for
  55. sceners who have produced something in
  56. 2004,   aswell   as   for  productions
  57. released  in  2004.  This is the clean
  58. slate  we're  talking about.  However,
  59. it  might  be  ok  to vote for all PPC
  60. productions released in the past, just
  61. not  for  any  old 68k production, nor
  62. for any scener not active in 2004.  We
  63. will have to see about that, and value
  64. your input on this too.

  66. »CL1:In  the  start,  you  will thus not be
  67. able  to  vote  on very many people at
  68. all,  and  the  charts  will look very
  69. empty.   We  will reflect this by only
  70. having  3  people/things  to vote for,
  71. per  category, and only displaying the
  72. top 10.  Later, we can expand this, if
  73. things    work   out   for   the   new
  74. 68k/PPCboard/AmigaOne/Pegasos   scene.
  75. I  refer  you to my article about this
  76. new  scene  we  have  to create, if we
  77. want  to  keep  any  form of the Amiga
  78. scene alive.  We will have most of the
  79. same categories in the new chart, with
  80. the  exception  of  the swapper chart.
  81. Yes, it is sad, but now it is clear to
  82. everyone:   swapping  is  dead, and it
  83. will  definately  not get a revival in
  84. the  near  future.   So, that chart is
  85. dead,  as  are all swappers.  I do not
  86. expect to get any angry denying letter
  87. as  a  consequence  of  this,  because
  88. there  is  no  one left with a will to
  89. send  it,  though  there  are some who
  90. might   get   the   beginnings   of  a
  91. nostalgic tear in their eyes.

  93. »CL0:Apart  from  that,  the new chart will
  94. probably  start  by  only having a few
  95. categories, depending on what has been
  96. released   in  2004.   Naturally,  the
  97. intro,   demo,   coder,  musician  and
  98. graphician  charts  have  to be there,
  99. but  it  will  probably take a year or
  100. more  before  we  have  enough 4k's to
  101. vote  for,  and  probably it will take
  102. even  longer  before  we  have  enough
  103. musicdisks  and  slideshows,  but that
  104. remains   to  be  seen,  and  we  will
  105. naturally     adjust     the    charts
  106. accordingly.    We  might  even  start
  107. producing  a  list  over releases from
  108. 2004  and onwards and put it up on our
  109. homepage,  so that people can see what
  110. has been released, and by whom, before
  111. voting.   As for diskmags and editors,
  112. well  if we have 3-5 diskmags released
  113. in  2004,  then I guess we have enough
  114. material   for   both   charts.    But
  115. otherwise  it  is better to wait until
  116. there  is  something to vote for.  The
  117. same  goes  for demo and intro, but we
  118. hope  these will be there right at the
  119. start,  because  otherwise  the  scene
  120. would be dead.

  122. »CL1:Extra  categories, like best wilddemo,
  123. best  musicpack  (if not combined with
  124. musicdisk,  like  it is now) might get
  125. introduced,  depending on what happens
  126. in  this new scene.  This is very much
  127. an  uncertain  frontier; the year 2004
  128. will    decide   what   happens,   the
  129. possibilities  are open, and the risks
  130. are  high.   But  so  too might be the
  131. rewards.

  133. »CL0:Also,  we  might need a new definition
  134. of  what a demo is.  These definitions
  135. must be created by someone, so this is
  136. probably  the best place to settle it,
  137. the  EC hopefully also being the forum
  138. of  the  new  scene.  How big should a
  139. demo  be?   What IS a demo?  Can it be
  140. an animation, must it be code?  How do
  141. we  want our scene, what is important,
  142. hardware   or  pure  artistry?   These
  143. questions  are  better  debated in the
  144. next  EC though.  And in any case, the
  145. EC   staff  might  need  to  make  the
  146. decision  for the rest of the sceners,
  147. at  least  in  regards  to our charts,
  148. unless  you  write  us,  or compose an
  149. article  describing  what  you want to
  150. happen  with  the  charts.   Afterall,
  151. this  is  a once in a lifetime change,
  152. we want to do it right, and we want to
  153. get feedback on it.  However, a system
  154. such as that I have just outlined will
  155. be   used   from  the  start,  if  the
  156. majority  accepts it, and then we will
  157. have  to take it from there, adjusting
  158. as  we  go.   We  only hope that there
  159. will  be  a  scene ready to jump in on
  160. the  new  charts,  and this is an open
  161. for all opportunity, now that we reset
  162. the  charts.  The charts must still be
  163. Amiga  related  though, meaning charts
  164. for  productions  or people working on
  165. something  Amiga,  AmigaOne or Pegasos
  166. related.   With this tight grouping, I
  167. hope we can create a new scene and new
  168. charts,   and   have   a   fresh,  new
  169. beginning;  there  is  no  alternative
  170. anymore.
